History & Benefits of Acupuncture

Acupuncture originated in China more than 3,000 years ago, making it one of the oldest and most commonly used medical procedures. Acupuncture is a lot more than needles, and offers a lot more than pain relief, and can be used as a preventative measure. Acupuncture is used to restore and redirect energy in the body that is believed to directly and indirectly affect health. Designated points are used to bring energy force back into balance. Depending on the severity of the condition, a treatment can include anything from one to twenty visits to the Acupuncturist.

Vital energy (or Qi) runs through meridian (or channels), which communicate throughout the body, telling it what is going on internally. Sometimes things get stuck, and a needle in the right place can help to clear up the problem. The flow of Qi can be altered due to a number of factors such as emotional states (anxiety, anger, fear, grief), poor nutrition, weather conditions, hereditary factors, infections, trauma or poisons.

The main aim of Acupuncture is to treat the individual as a whole, and to rebalance between their physical, emotional and spiritual needs. Acupuncture is truly a holistic form of medical treatment.

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for all. It has proved to be effective in pregnancy, and for pain relief in childbirth. It is also helpful for those trying to overcome addictions, such as smoking, alcohol, drugs and eating. Acupuncture can also be used alongside conventional medicine in the treatment of both acute and chronic conditions. As with any other therapy the response may vary from one person to another.
